Randy began working with projects in Haiti in August 2014. He is working under Mike Picchietti, president of the American Tilapia Association and running Aquasafra Co Ltd, the largest tilapia hatchery in the USA located in Brandenton, Florida. Mike is the aquaculture director for Operation Blessing in Haiti has has set up a tilapia hatchery in Port Au Prince to help jump start aquaculture in Haiti.
Randy travels to Haiti every other month to assist several different organizations that have aquaculture projects that Mike has started or is assisting with technology and management of projects. Everything from the fish hatchery, advanced fingerling production, grow out in tanks to a cage culture operation and gutting facility.
Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and produces very little of its own food. Haitians traditionally ate rice and fish, but these days fish are hard to find, and those that are imported are very expensive. We are trying to change that by working with hatcheries, pond farms, cage farms, and small processing plants to bring locally-sourced fresh fish back into Haiti.
